Halloween is over which means that holiday season is around the corner.  Cocktail parties, fancy dinners and all kinds of social obligations are going to fill up your calendar.  This time of year can be daunting for our waistlines, but my advice is to find the fun in all of it and come up with some figure friendly cocktails.  Enter the prickly pear!

Prickly Pears have glucose lowering effects and some studies have shown that the fruit can reduce glucose by up to 11 percent. That means you won’t have a sugar high and then crash, making you ravenous for more holiday treats.  I know prickly pears may be a bit hard to find, but look in your local Asian or Hispanic grocery stores or Whole Foods to find this wonderful fruit.

Prickly Pear Mezcal Daiquiri Recipe


  • 2 tbsp fresh prickly pear purée
  • 3-4 fresh mint leaves
  • 1.5 oz Mezcal (can be found at your local liquor store, or you can substitute Tequila)
  • 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 dashes bitters 
  • 3 oz club soda


First, create the prickly pear mint purée.  Take a raw prickly pear and rinse it under warm water followed by cold water.  Peel it being sure to remove all the hairs and rinse again.  Muddle the pear with the fresh mint until you have a nice smooth, liquid puree (about 5 minutes).

Next, add the Mezcal, lime juice, and bitters to a shaker full of ice. Shake vigorously for thirty seconds and pour over ice in a cute glass. Layer 1-2 teaspoons of prickly pear and mint purée over the ice. Top with club soda, and stir two revolutions. Enjoy.

Now don’t justify having 10 of these just because they are healthy.  You will become a Sloppy Sally.  I do recommend always flexing your guns while drinking! :)
