I know what you are thinking. The last thing you want to do after a workout is sit in a hot, stinky room full of semi-nude people, sweating profusely together, forcing you to wash your hair afterwards.  But, if you can muster the courage to enter, you are going to receive amazing benefits that outweigh the initial awkwardness (Tip: Avoid eye contact with bush-flashing nudists at all costs. Get a towel ladies.  Come on!)

Here are a few reasons to start using the steam room (wet heat) and/or sauna (dry heat).

Number 6 is really my favorite 😉

Sauna-Or-Steam-Bath-Which-Is-Better

1. Your skin will absolutely radiate

Both the wet heat of a steam room and the dry heat of a sauna will open up your pores and increase blood circulation. This will give your skin a healthy pink glow boosting your complexion’s brightness and making you look much fresher and younger.  Keep the compact in your purse. (Tip: Take a cold shower after your time in the hot box. This will close up your pores and ensure your skin looks poreless and tight.)

2. Flush out bacteria, toxins and viruses

Sweating is good for you. Sweating opens and cleans your pores, regulates your body temperature and expels toxins. Also, because of the high heat in saunas and steam rooms, your body temperature is driven up and will rid your body of certain viruses and bacteria that can’t survive above your normal body temperature.

3. Sooth your sore muscles

Steam rooms and saunas can help with muscle soreness brought on from tough workouts.  The heat will increase blood circulation, release endorphins and reduce lactic acid levels. It’s the perfect TLC for your sore muscles.  (Tip: It’s also a great place to do light stretching and joint rotations, but exit immediately if you get dizzy and drink water.)

4. Ultimate relaxation tool and mood regulator

Both wet and dry heat provide sedative effects on the body that create feelings of calmness and physical and emotional relaxation. We all need this. Even if you only have 5-10 minutes after a workout, get in the hot box. Breath deeply, leave all your stress in that room and relax. I guarantee the rest of your day will be more productive, you’ll regulate your mood and you’ll sleep so much better.

5. Natural remedy for colds and blocked sinuses

Specifically, the wet heat of the steam room will open airways and thin mucus in your body, mainly in your sinuses, throat and lungs. It’s effects are similar to a humidifier. Add some oils to your steam, such as eucalyptus, rosemary or peppermint to help with decongestion even more. (Tip: Bring Vick’s Vapor Rub or the like with you and put a small amount under your nose before entering the steam room.)

6.  Fantastic hangover cure

If you’ve had a hard night of partying, hit the steam room or sauna the next day to sweat it out.  Your puffy face and pale complexion due to lack of sleep will instantly be flushed with color and you’ll no longer look like the living dead. (Tip: A light workout will help even more. Just be sure to drink a ton of water as you are likely dehydrated).

7.  Look thin and toned after

You will instantly lose excessive water weight that you may be carrying.  Don’t be surprised if you look more defined or weigh less after using the steam room or sauna.  Though this benefit doesn’t really last as you rehydrate yourself, it’s fun seeing yourself in the mirror all thin and toned after a long sweat session!

Keep in mind that you will lose essential electrolytes and fluids when sweating so much.  Use steam rooms and saunas for only 15-20 minutes and be sure to drink plenty of water after.

May the balance be with you.

Let’s get sweaty,
